Combat Arms Instructor Senior Airman Aaron Schwartz, 412th Security Forces Squadron, demonstrates use of a gun lock during the wing commander’s quarterly command action board meeting at the Military and Family Readiness Center. More than 40 wing leaders and representatives from Helping Agencies discussed last year’s Defense Organizational Climate Survey participation and results. Other topics included suicide prevention and use of artificial intelligence to interpret unit climate indicators. The Air Force recorded more than 100 member and family-member suicides during 2025, of which more than 85 were by firearms. Schwartz demonstrated that it takes as little as 10 seconds in a defensive situation to remove a gun lock. “But in a different situation, those 10 seconds,” according to Rosemarie Leon, Integrated Resilience Office director, “give you a chance to breathe and hopefully decompress.” (Photo by Mike Paoli).

ROAD AND GATE CLOSURES
Drivers and pedestrians should use caution in the construction area and follow all signs and detours. Park away from the zone due to windblown debris, dirt and small rocks. WHAT: The California Department of Transportation has scheduled Lane Closures on the northbound and southbound Antelope Valley Freeway between Technology Drive in Palmdale and Avenue A in Lancaster, closing up to three lanes. The closures are necessary to perform pavement replacement, inside shoulder work and set K-rail that will extend the life of the existing lanes by a minimum of 40 years and improve ride quality. Currently, construction work is on-going Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 6 a.m., and Friday through Saturday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. to minimize traffic impacts. There are Long Term Closures of North- & Southbound Avenue H on- & off-ramps starting Jan. 6. Long Term Closure of North- & Southbound Avenue I on- & off-ramps starting Dec. 1. A section of Rosamond Blvd., between Lancaster and Fitz-Gerald Blvds., is scheduled to be closed from April 13 to May 15 for a road repair project. The five-week project will include the reconstruction of asphalt pavement and new striping. Detour signs will be posted to guide traffic around the closure. A road repair project at the South Gate entrance is scheduled to begin March 30 and continue through May 11. The project will include the reconstruction of asphalt pavement, new road striping and implementation of traffic control measures. Drivers should expect electronic signs, cones, flaggers and reduced speed limits throughout the project's duration. Officials urge caution when traveling through the area. The work will occur in three phases: ► Phase 1 and 2: South Gate closure has been extended until further notice (previously March 30 – April 6) Due to soil compaction issues, South Gate will be closed until further notice. Drivers should use the West and North gates. To ease traffic congestion, the commercial truck lane will be open to all inbound drivers from 6 to 8 a.m. during the closure. ► No impact: April 18 - May 10 (previously April 25 – May 10) South Gate will be available for normal inbound and outbound traffic. ► Phase 3: May 11 The project will conclude with road striping and painting on May 11. Edwards Air Force Base officials are seeking volunteers to represent the NASA Armstrong, North Base and North Edwards communities on the Restoration Advisory Board. The RAB facilitates two-way communication between the public and those responsible for environmental cleanup at Edwards AFB. Representatives are not expected to be environmental experts. Responsibilities A RAB public representative acts as a conduit for environmental cleanup information with members of the public. Responsibilities include distributing a semiannual newsletter and meeting flyers in addition to attending semiannual meetings. Applicants should be accessible to people within their respective area and willing to publicize contact information. Community concerns or questions can be addressed by the representative or referred to members of the Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s Restoration Management Section at Edwards AFB. Requirements Individuals interested in serving on the RAB must be at least 18 years of age and work or live in the area they seek to represent. Terms of service are two years in length. Military members, civil service and contract employees are welcome to apply. The veterinary treatment center is currently at a critical man shortage and are prioritizing availabilities outside of the primary mission to armed force members PCSing overseas. There are only a very few limited appointments available for the health certificates and this varies based on primary mission needs. Vaccines and sick call appointments cannot be accommodated currently. This may change in the next couple months. We apologize for the inconvenience. Phones will be checked once every two weeks for voicemails. Return phone calls can take longer depending on concentration of calls. On May 7, the Office of Personnel Management released a memorandum titled “Implementing the President’s Department of Government Efficiency Initiative for a Modernized, Efficient, and Expedient Retirement Process.” This government-wide initiative introduced important changes regarding how retirement applications are submitted to OPM. Effective July 1, all new retirement applications must be submitted electronically using OPM’s new Online Retirement Application system. ORA enables federal agencies and payroll providers to collaborate with prospective federal retirees in the assembly and submission of a retirement application packet. ****If you have already submitted or submit your retirement application prior to July 1 no action is required of you, and you do not need to contact the Benefits and Entitlements Service Team (BEST).**** If you have already submitted your Retirement Request for Personnel Action but have not submitted your retirement application prior to July 1, additional instructions will be sent to you, you do not need to contact BEST at this time. For future retirement planning, employees should continue contacting their supervisor to ensure the retirement RPA is submitted to BEST no sooner than 6 months prior to your retirement effective date. Once BEST receives your RPA, a BEST counselor will create your ORA retirement account using your personal email address only, official duty email addresses cannot be used. Once your ORA account is created, you will receive an email providing you a link to your ORA dashboard; where you will complete your retirement application, upload your supporting documentation, and submit your package. Please monitor your junk/spam folder for this notification. To ensure BEST has your personal email address, you are encouraged to update your profile in myFSS. To do so, log into myFSS (www.myfss.us.af.mil), select the Profile icon in the upper right-hand corner of the myFSS landing page, and select Profile, then select Update Personal Preferences. There you will add your personal email address and select Next, then Finish.

Edwards AFB Visitor Control Center would like to remind all personnel the changes in Installation Access requirements. The safety and security of the base remains our top priority and adherence to these requirements listed below ensures safe and efficient access to Edwards AFB. Military personnel, civilian employees, contractor’s dependents, and base residents are not impacted by this change. These groups may continue to use their Common Access Card or Uniformed Services identification Card for base access.
Starting May 7, members without a Common Access Card or Uniform Services Identification Card need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to gain base access. Real ID-compliant licenses and identification cards are easily recognizable by a star in the upper corner of the card.
The Real ID Act was passed by congress in 2005 to enhance national security. The goal was to make it difficult to produce counterfeit IDs and it creates a verification standard across all states.
IDs that contain the markings: “Not Valid for Federal Purposes,” “Not for Use as Federal Identification,” “Federal Limits May Apply,” or any other similar phrase are no longer an acceptable credential and must be utilized in conjunction with a federally accepted credential.
Retired Civilians who do not possess a real ID can bring a copy of their SF50 along with their nonfederal issued ID, original birth certificate with raised seal and social security card. They will be issued a DBIDs card for a period of 1 year (365 days).
Visitors who do not possess a driver’s license or identification card compliant with the REAL ID Act need to present two valid forms of identification to gain access to base. Accepted forms are listed below:

On April 9, 1983, the Space Shuttle Orbiter Challenger (pictured here landing at Edwards in 1985) landed on the main runway following its first orbital flight (STS-6). During the course of the mission it established U.S. records for the greatest mass lifted into orbit (106,882 kg - 235,635 lbs) and for the greatest mass lifted to the greatest altitude (20,477 kgs - 45,049.4 lbs to 291.731 km - 181.281 mi). This was the first Shuttle mission diverted to Edwards AFB due to bad weather in Florida.
