412th Test Wing

The 412th Test Wing (412 TW) is the host wing for Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. — the 2nd largest base in the Air Force.

The wing oversees base day-to-day operations and provides support for over 10,000 military, federal civilian and contract personnel assigned to a 481-square mile installation.

The 412 TW plans, conducts, analyzes, and reports on all flight and ground testing of aircraft, weapons systems, software and components as well as modeling and simulation for the U.S. Air Force. There are three core components for this mission: flying operations, maintenance and engineering.

The 412 TW operates under the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), which operates under the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) as described below. 

Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC)

 

Headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) is a major command created July 1, 1992. The command conducts research, development, test and evaluation, and provides the acquisition management services and logistics support necessary to keep Air Force weapon systems ready for war.

There are six AFMC's Centers carrying its six core missions:

The Air Force Test Center (AFTC) conducts developmental and follow-on testing and evaluation of manned and unmanned aircraft and related avionics, flight-control, munitions, and weapon systems. It has flight-tested every aircraft in the Army Air Force's and the Air Force's inventory since World War II. AFTC also operates the Air Force Test Pilot School where the Air Force's top pilots, navigators, and engineers learn how to conduct flight tests and generate the data needed to carry out test missions.

 02 Sustainment and Logistics | Air Force Sustainment Center | Tinker Air Force Base, Okla.

The mission of the Air Force Sustainment Center (AFSC) is to provide sustainment and logistics readiness to deliver combat power for America. The center provides globally integrated, agile logistics and sustainment to the warfighter through world-class depot maintenance, supply chain management and installation support.

 03 Life Cycle Management | Air Force Life Cycle Management Center | Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio

The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC) mission is to deliver affordable and sustainable war-winning capabilities to U.S. and international partners, on time, on cost, anywhere, anytime from cradle to grave. AFLCMC is the single center responsible for total life cycle management of all aircraft, engines, munitions, and electronic systems. AFLCMC's workforce of more than 26,000 is located at over 60 locations across the globe — from Peterson AFB, to Oslo, Norway.

 04 Discovery and Development | Air Force Research Laboratory | Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio

Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is the Department of the Air Force's only organization wholly dedicated to leading the discovery, development and integration of warfighting technologies in air, space and cyber for the U.S. Air and Space Forces. AFRL leverages a diverse science and technology portfolio that ranges from fundamental and advanced research to advanced technology development. The lab also provides a wide range of technical services to joint acquisition, logistics, aerospace medicine and operational warfighting communities.

 05 Nuclear Materiel Management​ | Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center | Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M.

The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC), established March 31, 2006, is the nuclear-focused center within AFMC synchronizing all aspects of nuclear materiel management on behalf of the AFMC commander in direct support of Air Force Global Strike Command. Headquartered at Kirtland Air Force Base, the center has about 1,800 personnel assigned at 17 locations worldwide and consists of five major execution directorates: Air Delivered Capabilities; Ground Based Strategic Deterrent Systems; Minuteman III Systems; Nuclear Command, Control and Communications (NC3) Integration; and Nuclear Technology and Integration. It also has several functional directorates and its commander is dual-hatted as the Air Force Program Executive Officer for Strategic Systems.

 06 Installation and Mission Support | Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center 

The Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center (AFIMSC) serves as the single intermediate-level headquarters responsible for providing installation and mission support capabilities to 83 Air Force and Space Force installations, eight major commands and two direct reporting units. The AFIMSC cross-functional team provides globally integrated management, resourcing and combat support operations for Airman and family services, base communications, chaplain programs, civil engineering, contracting, logistics readiness, public affairs, security forces and financial management. The center manages an annual budget of approximately $10 billion.

The 412th Test Wing (412 TW) performs test and evaluation on aircraft and systems and influences weapon systems design to make sure they meet operational warfighting, combat support or training requirements. The 412 TW also operates the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School.

 02 Arnold Engineering and Development Complex | Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn.

Arnold Engineering and Development Complex scientists and engineers perform ground tests, engineering analysis and technical evaluations for all the U.S. armed forces, other government agencies and commercial aerospace industry on aircraft, missiles and space systems at the conditions they will experience during a mission for research, system development and operational programs.

 03 96th Test Wing | Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.

The 96th TW plans, directs and documents test and evaluation of armament, navigation, guidance systems, and command and control systems.

ASSOCIATE UNITS

There are a vast array of organizations at Edwards that do not fall under the 412th Test Wing. These are called Associate Units. These units do everything from providing an on-base grocery store to testing state-of-the-art rockets.
