AFRL Family Day

The main feature of the AFRL family day was the luncheon where family members and AFRL staff were treated to a live BATES rocket test. The Ballistic Test in an Evaluation System, which is a standard procedure to test a rocket propellant in a motor casing, burned 15-pounds of propellant in a custom made rocket engine in about five seconds. The BATES test was one in a series and was scheduled specifically for the AFRL family day so spouses and children could see what the AFRL is all about. MAAS installation

Airmen from 823rd and 820th RED HORSE perform stakeline installation on the mobile aircraft arresting system. More than 150 66-inch stakes were installed to keep the MAAS in place. Global Hawk

A BACN Global Hawk, one of two battlefield airborne command node unmanned aerial systems, took off from Northrop Grumman’s manufacturing facility in Palmdale, Calif., July 14. The aircraft made its first functional checkout flight after completing modifications to a communications platform. The functional checkout flight ended with a picture-perfect landing at Edwards. The Euro Hawk flies high above Edwards Air Force Base June 29. The unmanned aircraft system, built by Northrop Grumman and European Aeronautic Defence and Space, completed its first flight after taking off from Northrop's Palmdale, Calif., manufacturing facility and then landing at Edwards. The Euro Hawk unmanned aircraft system completed its first flight June 29. The Euro Hawk is the first international configuration of the RQ-4 Global Hawk. The aircraft is built by Northrop Grumman and European Aeronautic Defence and Space. 95TH COMMS GRP INACTIVATED

Team Edwards continued its command restructuring process today with the inactivation of the 95th Communications Group. Col. Paul R. Hardy, 95th Communications Group commander, inactivated the heretofore individual command, and relinquished command to Col. Darrell L. Riggs, 95th Mission Support Group commander. The 95th Communications Group became the 95th Communications Squadron under the provisions of Air Force Instruction 51604 and Special Organization Number GA-4.
