Chief Master Sgt. Andrea Gates, Air Force Test Center command chief, shared the story of an unsung hero from the 96th Test Wing Operations Group at Nellis AFB, Nevada, during the Air Force Test Center commander’s call April 7. A developmental test parachutist jumped with his team from an HC-130J at 5,000 feet over a Nevada test training range in June 2014. What seemed to be a routine high-altitude, high opening jump, quickly went awry when his captain became entangled and was unable to release his chute. The test parachutist was able to keep him alive with emergency oxygen until the captain was MEDEVAC'd to a facility over 130 miles away. The captain survived because of the time critical decisions made by his unsung hero. (U.S. Air Force photo by Rebecca Amber)
