First flight marks temporary runway operational use

Edwards volunteers walk on the new 12,000-foot long temporary main runway here during a foreign-object-debris walk on May 16. As an incentive to pick up as much debris as possible, organizers of the FOD walk hid numbered objects that if found could be redeemed for prizes. The temporary runway, which became operational on May 19, will be used while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducts a $103 million project to replace the majority of the 50-plus-year old primary runway 04/22.
