A Global Hawk Unmanned Aerial Vehicle raises a plume of water as it taxis on South Base during wet runway testing here recently. The 452nd Flight Test Squadron has completed two of three phases of wet runway testing on the Global Hawk — the first ever on an unmanned aircraft. The testing was conducted at varying weights and speeds to gather aircraft braking performance data on a wet runway and to compare it to the existing dry runway data. Some of the parameters evaluated during this Operational Requirements Document-mandated testing were stopping distances, cross-track deviation, landing gear loads, braking deceleration rates, anti-skid response, brake temperatures and pressures, and tire wear. Data gathered during the first two phases will be used as a risk-reduction tool for high-speed wet runway test points during phase three, which is scheduled to be completed later this year.
