AFRL Family Day

The main feature of the AFRL family day was the luncheon where family members and AFRL staff were treated to a live BATES rocket test. The Ballistic Test in an Evaluation System, which is a standard procedure to test a rocket propellant in a motor casing, burned 15-pounds of propellant in a custom made rocket engine in about five seconds. The BATES test was one in a series and was scheduled specifically for the AFRL family day so spouses and children could see what the AFRL is all about. After lunch, family members broke down into three groups to go on tours of different AFRL facilities, Aug. 5. (Air Force photo by Kenji Thuloweit)

BATES TESTING

The Air Force Research Laboratory conducted a 15 pound BATES test. BATES stands for Ballistic Test and Evaluation System, which is a small scale apparatus to test rocket propellant and designs in a standardized rocket motor casing. NASA Bill Gries

Recently retired Edwards Air Force Base airspace manager Bill Gries has been honored with a NASA "Silver Snoopy" award for his service as coordinator of space shuttle landing contingency support at Edwards. NASA astronaut Marsha Ivins presented the award to Mr. Gries during a brief ceremony at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center June 14. A former air traffic controller at Edwards, Gries coordinated all space shuttle landing support activities from Department of Defense facilities in the high desert area, including the Naval Air Warfare Station at China Lake and Fort Irwin, Calif. TPS increases bandwidth

A newly installed antenna sits atop the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School. The antenna is part of a new aeronautical telemetry ground system. The system will allow airborne data to be transferred to the ground in the C-band frequency range in addition to the L-and S-band frequency ranges used by the current system.
