New truancy law this coming school year Published Aug. 6, 2013 By 412th Test Wing Public Affairs EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- An absence must be verified within 24 hours of a student's return to school or it will be entered in the student's attendance file as a truancy and reported to the attendance supervisor, school administration and county truant officer. A student is also considered truant with a tardy exceeding 30 minutes. If a student has missed 10% of the school year, they will receive "chronic truant" status. Chronic truancy in students grades k-8 will result in a misdemeanor for the parents who may be subject to imprisonment for up to one year or a fine up to $2,000, or both. A student who is truant from school three or more times in the school year will be referred to the District's Student Attendance Review Board. Parents or students may be subject to citations.
