Auto Hobby Shop is a 'DIY' facility Published Nov. 12, 2013 By Rebecca Amber Staff writer EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Auto Hobby Shop and Arts and Crafts center in Bldg. 2440 was built in 1996. Today, the center contains the Auto Hobby Shop, Custom Framing and Engraving. According to Sandra Davis, 412th Force Support Squadron, Community Services flight chief, the Auto Hobby Shop is a "do-it-yourself" facility for those who are "automotive inclined." The shop has 14 bays and full-time mechanics on hand to answer any questions customers may have or assist with minor automotive repairs. Customers can come to the Auto Hobby Shop and change their own oil, brakes or work on their vehicle's transmission. The shop also offers tire rotation, rotor turning, wheel balancing and air conditioning services. "We try to keep our prices where everybody can afford them," said Davis. "If you do it yourself, it's going to cost $6 an hour for the lift, which is really inexpensive and you don't have to bring any tools, all will be provided. Plus, customers have a mechanic on hand to answer any inquiries as needed." For those who have no prior automotive repair experience, the shop offers one-on-one training on how to operate the lift. From there, the mechanic can teach customers how to perform operations like changing their oil or brakes. The shop charges an hourly rate that includes access to all of the shop's tools and Mitchell's on Demand, a program for troubleshooting automotive problems. This software provides detailed instructions for repairing the issues that a customer's vehicle may have. The center is open to military, civilians and contractors. "It's a service that we offer to the entire Edwards community," said Davis. "The only thing we don't have is a body shop or welding shop. But, if you like to tinker, as far as the mechanics or restoration of vehicles, you can do it all right here." Coming soon the Automotive Shop will have oil, oil filters and small vehicle accessories for easy purchase. Please call the Auto Hobby Shop for more information at (661) 525-2886. Not only does this center provide an Auto Hobby Shop, this facility also provides custom framing and engraving. These services are provided by highly helpful employees who will make any idea that a customer has into reality. When it comes to custom framing, customers can choose the type of frame, glass and mat. Not only can pictures be framed, but squadron coins, flags, jerseys, etc. can be mounted. For engraving, the shop can engrave any logo or script on plastic, wood, glass, metal and even leather. The engraving shop allows customers to bring in items to be engraved. This is great for wedding glasses or glass steins. These custom services make a great gift for anyone who may be PCSing or a one-of-a-kind retirement gift.
