Wanted: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Preparers! Published Nov. 19, 2013 By 412th Test Wing Public Affairs EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Brig. Gen. Michael Brewer wants you! The 412th Test Wing commander is looking for volunteers to help out during the upcoming tax season. Each year the Air Force assists active duty military, retirees, and family members by provided free income tax preparation and filing. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Preparer program needs well-trained volunteers who commit their time and effort with the often burdensome and expensive responsibility of preparing and filing tax returns. Whether military or civilian, officer or enlisted, anyone interested can volunteer. Brewer is asking all squadron commanders and civilian leaders to allow as many volunteers as practicable from their units to participate. Volunteers will be considered on duty time when volunteering at the Tax Center. Participants will act as IRS certified tax preparers. Individuals who will be preparing tax returns must be properly certified and the IRS Certification Course will be Dec. 9 to 13. Volunteers will also take the California Franchise Tax Board course, which will take place Jan. 21 to 24, 2014. Both courses will be offered on base. During the last tax season, Edwards AFB provided assistance to a wide variety of members saving the community over $100,000 in tax prep fees. This success is due to the dedication and active participation of volunteers from the community. Tax season officially stars in late January and ends April 15, 2014.
