After a dominating run by the Desert Junior-Senior High School Girls Basketball team, their season finally came to an end last weekend in San Diego. The Scorpions made it to the California State Quarterfinals, the state's version of the Sweet 16.

The team lost to San Diego's La Jolla Country Day High School 55-28, March 15.

The loss caps a stellar season for the Scorpions who won their first ever California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) championship in Division 5 of Southern California. It was also the first time in DHS history where the team was invited to the state championship tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals.

"We were the fifth seed in our division; we had to beat the 12, 4, 1, and 2 seeds to get here," said Theresa Faulk, girls head basketball coach. "I'm so proud of the girls, love them all! This is an experience and accomplishment they will cherish. When they look back at their high school years, they will remember their teammates; they did it together."

Faulk said she attributes the unprecedented success to the hard work of the girls and her two coaches, Jeff Lensch and Sabrina Jones.

"It started a couple of years ago, the Long Beach camp and summer ball. The girls play on the same travel team participating in the Palmdale Summer League. Now that everyone can see what we have been able to achieve through dedication, hard-work, no excuses and teamwork; it will encourage other girls to want the same. Hopefully the girls returning to our program next season are ready to pick up where this team left off. Defense wins games and defense will lead to offense," said Faulk.

Faulk also commended the Edwards AFB Womens Basketball team for their "priceless" commitment to mentoring the girls, which contributed a "huge" part to their success this year.

She also said the team couldn't do it without the help of her coaches.

"Coach Jeff Lensch is by far one of the best coaches around. He is a true teacher of the game, selfless. Coach Jones' impact on our post players is amazing. She has given the girls the opportunity to realize their athletic potentials and is a leader by example," Faulk said.

"It takes a program to get to this level especially to continue at this level... we have a girls basketball program that has been tested and has realized a CIF Championship."
