Team Edwards honors 2014 CCAF graduates Published May 8, 2014 By Rebecca Amber Staff writer EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Graduates of the Community College of the Air Force and private colleges celebrated their higher degree completion with a ceremony May 7 at Club Muroc. The 2014 graduates were addressed by guest speaker Chief Master Sgt. James Segebarth, 412th Security Force Squadron, Security Forces manager. In his speech, Segebarth told the story of a 1968 Olympiad competing as a marathon runner in Mexico City. The runner fell during the race leaving his right leg badly cut and his knee dislocated. He was bandaged and despite warnings by attending medics, he continued to run, jog, walk and hobble along until he crossed the finish line. When asked by reporters why he completed the race, the runner replied, "My country didn't send me 5,000 miles to start this race; they sent me 5,000 miles to finish it." "This story inspires people of all walks of life to stay faithful and focused even in the most difficult of situations," said Segebarth." If you look back, I'm sure you can recall an instance or two where you wanted to give up on your higher education, and for good reasons, but you didn't. You have stayed the course." Segebarth then encouraged the graduates to remember throughout their professional careers to put others before themselves and exemplify servant leadership. "If you love your friends, you will serve your friends. If you love your community, you will serve your community. If you love money, you will serve your money and if you love only yourself, you will serve only yourself and you will have only yourself," said Segebarth. "You will truly serve only what you love because service is love made visible." CCAF is a federally-chartered degree-granting institution that serves the United States Air Force's enlisted total force. The college partners with over 106 affiliated Air Force schools, 82 Education Service Offices located worldwide, and more than 1,500 civilian academic institutions to serve more than 305,000 active, guard, and reserve enlisted personnel, making CCAF the world's largest community college system. CCAF's mission is to offer and award job-related associate in applied science degrees and other academic credentials that enhance mission readiness, contribute to recruiting, assist in retention, and support the career transitions of Air Force enlisted members.
