Disability Employment Awareness Month kicks off Oct. 3 with a bird watching tour at the newly renovated and refreshed Piute Ponds, Edwards AFB's own bird sanctuary. Come see wild birds touch and go through our ponds, as they begin their winter migration.

As everyone knows, the early bird gets the worm so we will meet early, at 8 a.m. at the Welcome to Edwards sign on the western boundary of the base.

The primary focus will be on persons with disabilities, but others are also welcome to attend. This will be a walking and driving tour of Piute Ponds for up to 30 people. The tour should last about two to three hours.

"We want everyone to know that people with disabilities can be accomplished in the work place and also in recreational pursuits" said Deal.

Another event that the 412th Force Support Squadron Services Division will be hosting is an afternoon of fun at the Rod and Gun Activity Thursday, Oct. 16. The events will begin at 2:30 p.m. and can last until sunset.

"We are opening up the trap and skeet ranges, the archery range and the paintball field to persons with disabilities," said Jim Norman, Edwards Outdoor Recreation director.

The first round of trap will be free for the first 10 disabled persons who sign up.

Norman said that Services will make shotguns available for use at no additional charge. There will be volunteers to help teach participants. Services will also have recurved bows and arrows available for use. There will be archery experts available to teach participants how to shoot.

"We will also be having paintball and people to help with that sporting event," said Norman.

These events are available for persons with disabilities, but they are open to the entire Edwards community. To sign up, please contact Mark Hagan at 661-277-1418, or email at william.hagan.1@us.af.mil.
