Desert High School Junior ROTC Honor Guard cadets gathered at the school's flag pole early Sept. 11, to remember the individuals who lost their lives in the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks in 2001. As the bugalist played "Taps," the flag was raised and lowered to half-staff. Cadets saluted the flag as the student body and school staff recited the "Pledge of Allegiance."

Nearly 3,000 people died Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners to crash them into the buildings igniting the Global War on Terrorism.

By presidential proclamation, the annual observance of Patriot Day, begins each September 11 with a moment of silence. Flags are displayed at half-staff in honor of those who lost their lives in the attack.
