This year's Air Force Assistance Fund campaign officially kicks off March 23 at Edwards.

The secretary of the Air Force approved a $5.97 million goal for this year's campaign.

The AFAF is a charitable fund by Airmen for Airmen. All monies raised during the campaign go to supporting the Air Force's four charities. Contributions, which are tax deductible, go to support the different organizations, which help Air Force members with aid in emergencies, educational needs, or to have a secure retirement home for widows of Air Force members who need financial assistance.

"Each year, many of us know someone who experiences the unexpected in their lives. This campaign raises money that goes directly back to our Airmen; from the Air Force Village to the Air Force Aid Society, the Air Force Enlisted Village and the General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation," said Capt. Claire Carlos, 412th Force Support Squadron, AFAF installation project officer.

Everyone is eligible to donate, however, unit project officers and AFAF keyworkers will solicit only Air Force active duty members and retirees who are now Department of the Air Force civilians.

"There are two ways to contribute to the AFAF, Payroll Deduction Plan allotments and cash. Cash is U.S. currency, personal checks, money orders, cashier's checks, endorsed traveler's checks or other redeemable instruments," said Carlos.

Under the PDP, Defense Finance and Accounting Service automatically deducts monthly contributions commencing June 1 for military members and July 1 for retirees.

Edwards AFB's AFAF committee will hold a kick-off luncheon March 20 at Club Muroc beginning at 11 a.m.

A 5K fun run will also be held April 1 starting from the fitness center at 7:30 a.m. The first 50 runners will receive a free t-shirt. The entire base community is invited to participate.
