Raising awareness during Child Abuse Prevention Month involves a variety of events and activities, and this month, Family Advocacy and the 412th Medical Group Booster Club decided to do something different by hosting "Edwards Got Talent" April 24 at the Oasis Community Center to highlight and encourage the talents of Edwards AFB's youth and adults alike.

"I believe these events bring awareness to these types of issues and is a good way to bring the community together," said Susan Cartwright, Family Advocacy Outreach manager. "I came up with the idea of a talent contest as a way to bring awareness to the issue of child abuse and thought I might share one of the things I enjoy, which is singing."

While anyone with base access was invited to participate or attend, performers included children, the youngest being age three, to adults who sang, danced, played an instrument or performed a comedy routine. Awards were given out at the close of the event with Racheal Cregier placing first for her singing of  "Go Light your World" and "Don't Rain on my Parade." Piper Meisler placed second with her cello rendition and Adelina Geraghty, singer, placed third.

Cartwright also noted that since October is Domestic Violence Prevention Month, they will also be partnering to bring more events during that month.

"Along with this event, we also want the community to be aware that we have several free classes on base, which include Parenting, ages 2 to 10 and ages 11 to 17; Relationship Enhancement and Communication Improvement; New & Expectant Father's Classes; Pregnancy Orientation Classes and Stress and Anger Management workshops," Cartwright added. "Active duty, civilians, contractors and their family members are authorized and welcome to attend. We also come to units and can present mini versions of these classes. We really appreciate the community's support and hope for great turnouts in the coming month's events."
