Library encourages exercise for minds and body Published June 16, 2015 By Rebecca Amber Staff writer EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Edwards AFB Library Summer Reading Program encourages children to exercise their minds during the summer months when school is not in session. June 12, they encouraged them to be physically active too, with a bouncy house, potato sack races, hula hoops and jump ropes. This year's program officially started June 5 and is open to children of all ages. At sign up each child receives a bookmark, pencil, book bag and t-shirt with the theme, "Read to the Rhythm." For every 10 books read, the child will receive a prize. Each child is eligible to earn up to 10 prizes. During the summer of 2014, participants read 21, 625 books collectively. This year, a new goal has been set at 25,000 total books read. A special event is scheduled for each week of the program at 10 a.m. Here's an updated schedule: June 19 Annie Banannie Balloon Storyteller June 26 Edwards AFB K-9 Unit Demonstration July 10 Rosamond Feline Conservation Center Presentation July 17 Environmental Management Presentation: "Wildlife on Edwards AFB" July 24 "Sparky" from Edwards AFB Fire Dept. Visits the Library July 31 Haynes Marionettes: The Princess and the Pirates August 7 Carnival Games August 14 Grand Finale: Grand Prize Raffle, Refreshments and Special Guest "KaBoom" from the JetHawks While at the library families can check out books and movies as well as enjoy the current artwork on display. This month, the library is featuring original works by Air Force veteran Mike Stuart. The library features a new artist every one to two months.
