A program created with the Air Force Materiel Command DOD civilian in mind, Civilian Health Promotion Services offers a variety of opportunities to catalyze strong health and well-being for the Edwards civilian workforce.

"They realized that a healthy workforce is a productive workforce, so they developed CHPS. It's a wellness program for the AFMC DOD Civilian," said Ronald Jackson, CHPS Civilian Health Promotion coordinator.

Health screenings play a central role in creating each individual's wellness goals and fostering a healthy lifestyle. CHPS uses three different screening tools to create a clear, personalized path towards a healthier lifestyle.

The InBody test, acquired last October, provides a report on body composition. It looks at the amount and percentage of fat and muscle throughout the body and compares them to expected healthy ranges.

The Cardiac Risk Profile screening measures cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose levels, blood pressure and body mass index.

"The Air Force looks at it as a way to help save people's lives. You could find out something is wrong before something major happens," said Jackson, referring to the Cardiac Risk Profile screening.

The next step in determining what lifestyle improvements can be made is the Health Risk Assessment, a short questionnaire relating to your own personal health. The annual assessment can be completed on the AFMC wellness website, www.AFMCwellness.com.

The website, also known as the AFMC Wellness Support Center, has a wide array of free resources geared towards achieving and tracking health goals. Monthly calendars provide information on theĀ more thanĀ 50 different classes offered by CHPS. Currently, CHPS is in the process of updating many of those classes and will be adding additional classes in the coming months.

The website also offers periodic health and fitness challenges, completion of which lead to tiered incentive prizes.

CHPS seeks to make their resources accessible and readily available.

"The great thing about our screenings is we are able to give the results right then and there...Our program is free. We can usually get you in and out of the room within 15 to 20 minutes for all of our screenings. Just the InBody screening is less than 10 minutes," said Jackson.

According to Jackson, DOD civilians are permitted to use their physical training time to access CHPS services, with the approval of their doctor and supervisor.

Civilian Health Promotion Services is located next to the fitness center in Bldg. 2204, Room 2A.
