Wing participation in the Project84 program has brought many cost saving ideas to the attention of leadership here at Edwards AFB. Many of the ideas submitted were aimed at reducing consumption of materials, water and electricity. Some cost savings require time before being realized, but others such as Xeriscaping and printer right-sizing have had an immediate impact. Your efforts to identify efficiencies leading to tangible cost savings are greatly appreciated.

Next week, the 412th Test Wing will transition from our local Project84 program to the Air Force's mandated Airmen Powered by Innovation program - API. In addition to replacing Project84, API will replace three existing Air Force "good idea" programs - the Innovative Development through Employee Awareness, Productivity Enhancing Capital Investment and Best Practices programs, thus expanding the role of Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century (AFSO21). API also serves as a follow-on program to institutionalize the success of the 2013 Every Dollar Counts campaign.

API was created to gain efficiencies by consolidating existing programs. API came online in April of 2014 with improvements including increased access to assistance prior to submitting ideas, establishment of a top-down tracking requirement, and confirmation and documentation of savings realized from implementing Airmen's ideas.

"The requirement for us to track these ideas from the top down recognizes the importance we place in having an environment that fosters and rewards innovation at all levels," said Gen. Larry Spencer, the Air Force vice chief of staff. "In this fiscally-constrained environment, we need every Airman engaged in finding smarter ways to do business."

Members of the Edwards community are highly encouraged to continue sharing innovative ideas through API. For specifics about the API program and award incentives, reference Air Force Instruction 38-402.
