412th TW commander implements policy prohibiting 'lane splitting' on installation Published Aug. 5, 2015 By Staff Sgt. Jason Hoffman 412th Security Forces Squadron EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- In a policy letter issued in support of EAFBI 31-218, Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision, the commander of the 412th Test Wing calls for the prohibited practice of "lane splitting" on all areas of Edwards. This includes surrounding and tenant installations, Air Force Research Laboratory Detachment 7 and U.S. Air Force Plant 42. This policy also makes it illegal to pass on the right, ride on the shoulder, ride in a designated emergency lane, or cross over the fog line. Military personnel who violate the policy could face adverse administrative actions, non-judicial, or judicial punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Civilians operating on Edwards who violate this policy may face criminal prosecution or administrative action. The minimum penalty for violating the policy directive is a citation for "improper passing" and will result in having four points assessed against the violator's base driving privileges. Further citations may be assessed at the discretion of the responding officer. Though lane splitting is legal on California roadways, it is prohibited on base. According to the California Highway Patrol, motorcycle riders can 'split' lanes, but must do so in a "safe and prudent manner." "The benefit of lane splitting doesn't always outweigh the risks for riders," said Staff Sgt. Jason Hoffman, 412th Security Forces Police Services.
