Annual orientation trains new key spouses Published Aug. 18, 2015 By 412th Test Wing Public Affairs EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted an annual Key Spouse Program Orientation Aug. 18 for newly appointed and returning key spouses. The Key Spouse Program is an official unit/family program designed to enhance readiness and establish a sense of Air Force community. As a commander's program its aim is to promote partnerships with unit leadership, other key spouses, families and the A&FRC and other community and helping agencies. The key spouses are highly encouraged to check in regularly with families of deployed servicemembers. Each participating commander designates a key spouse to represent him in caring for the unit's families. According to Lesley Smith, Airman and Family Services Flight chief, the commander's spouse is often available to the key spouse in a supporting, mentorship role. At the orientation, new and returning key spouses learn about important topics like resiliency and suicide. After that, the spouses are required to do quarterly training sessions. The A&FRC however, offers monthly gatherings for the purpose of discussion and guest lectures.
