Divorce on the horizon? Get informed, schedule JA appointment

Divorce is often complicated and emotionally stressful. California's Self-Help website offers resources to simplify the process. Many couples may qualify for summary dissolution, a streamlined process for divorce or ending a domestic partnership.  While less expensive and less paperwork-intensive than standard divorce, both require at least six months to finalize in California.

Summary dissolution eligibility requirements:

  • Married less than five years
  • No children together
  • Minimal property and debt
  • No spousal support request
  • Agreement on property division
  • At least one spouse meets California's residency requirement (six months in the state, three months in the filing county).

Military spouses considering divorce should review the following California Self-Help website resources and schedule a follow-up appointment with the legal office:

The 412th Test Wing Office of the Staff Judge Advocate provides legal advice and support in civil, contract, labor, environmental, claims, and military justice law. JA assists military members, retirees, and their families with personal, non-criminal legal matters.
