Team Edwards kicks off 101 Critical Days of Summer Published May 29, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Julius Delos Reyes 95th Air Base Wing Public Affairs EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- With summer starting to heat up, Team Edwards began reminding people about keeping safety in mind for summer during the 101 Critical Days of Summer Kickoff at the Oasis Community Center on May 24. The campaign runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. "The 101 Critical Days of Summer is the time of the season where the greatest potential for off-duty mishaps occurs," said Tech. Sgt. Steve Briggs, Air Force Flight Test Center Ground Safety noncommissioned officer in charge. The event was organized by the AFFTC Safety office with various base organizations on hand to provide information about summer safety. "All the volunteers were eager to help and the event went smoothly," said Senior Airman Brandon Alexander, AFFTC Ground Safety journeyman. "The event was successful in helping get the message out about safety and fun." The Desert Wheels provided information regarding motorcycle safety. Motorcycles, gear and safety equipment were also on display. The Chapel gave information regarding spiritual wellness and how to develop spiritual health. Meanwhile, the 95th Aerospace Medical Squadron offered public health information on dog bites, food-borne bacteria, West Nile virus, proper procedure for a safe and healthy grilling. They also provided tips on heat stress prevention, how to recognize the signs for heat stress ailments and the importance of proper hydration. The Environmental Management presented some desert wildlife and what to do when encountering one of them. The presentation included Mojave green rattlesnake, coyote and desert tortoise. Other organizations included the dental clinic, Combat Arms, Education Office and the Health and Wellness Center. "Because of the amount of activities people do in the summer, it is very important to keep safety in mind," Sergeant Briggs said. "We try to bring this to everyone's attention that these are the critical days of the summer." During these critical days of summer, it is important for people to constantly think of personal risk management, Airman Alexander said. In everything they do, they should be asking themselves two questions -- what can go wrong, and what can they do to minimize the risk. "Safety is important because if our people get hurt, it doesn't just affect them," he said. "It also affects their families, friends, co-workers and their ability to do their jobs."
