The Desert High Scorpions football team shut out league rival, Rosamond Roadrunners 27-0 during their homecoming football game Oct. 12 to improve their season's standings.

A scoreless first half gave way to an explosive third quarter by Desert, which put 20 unanswered points on the board, then added a fourth-quarter touchdown to seal their victory.

Opening the score for Desert was running back Terrance Wells, who ran the ball down the right sideline 93 yards for a touchdown with 8:55 left in the third quarter.

On the ensuing short kick, Scorpions defensive back Michael Vaughn jumped on the loose ball, giving the Scorpions possession at the Rosamond 40-yard line. From there, the Scorpions put their running game in gear with Wells and Phil Pleasant driving them inside the 15-yard line. Brandon Lowe finished off the scoring drive by breaking down the right sideline and into the end zone for a 13-0 Desert lead at the six-minute mark.

On what seemed like a replay of their previous kick off, Vaughn collected another loose ball after the Scorpions short kick. This gave his team possession inside the 35. However, a fumble recovered by Rosamond outside linebacker Courtney Quinton ended the drive.

After a strong defensive stand, the Desert offense got back in gear with a 65-yard scoring drive which started on their own 35-yard line. It ended with Brandon Lowe adding his second touchdown of the game. Lowe exploded from the Rosamond 45-yard line making several nice cuts through the Roadrunners defense and going all the way in for the score. Following the touchdown, A.J. Hall made his second point after touchdown creating a 20-0 Desert lead after three quarters.

Wells chalked up his second touchdown of the game early in the fourth. He punched in a 68-yard run from his own 32-yard line after Vaughn, opened up a lane for him with a block. A.J. Hall added his third successful PAT of the night for a final score of 27-0.

Wells rushed for 145 yards with 13 carries, while Pleasant had 23 carries for 143 yards. Lowe was also credited with 56 yards in the game.

Kicking for more than 150 yards in the game was Rosamond junior Armando Quintero. He had several booming punts forcing the Scorpions to start deep in their own territory on several occasions.

"We knew we had to contain number 19," Scorpions assistant coach Corey Fields said. "If we did that, our offense would take care of the rest. Our passing and running started clicking in the second half and that was the key to this win."

Desert High School improved thier standing to 5-1, while Rosamond dropped to 1-5.
