Team Edwards to host Military Retiree Appreciation Day Published Aug. 18, 2008 By Senior Airman Julius Delos Reyes 95th Air Base Wing Public Affairs EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Team Edwards is hosting a military Retiree Appreciation Day Sept. 13 at hangar 1600. The event is open to all retired servicemembers in the Antelope Valley and surrounding communities, including active-duty military, reservists and guardsmen, as well as their families. "Every year, Edwards honors those who have served before by setting aside a day of education and special services," said 1st Lt. James Athnos, 95th Medical Group Tricare operations patient administration flight commander and Retiree Appreciation Day coordinator. "We want to show our appreciation for everything they've done." The day will feature information booths from various base and surrounding community organizations such as the Air Force Flight Test Center Staff Judge Advocate, 95th Security Forces Squadron, Defense Commissary Agency, Casualty Affairs office and Health and Wellness Center. The base legal office, military personnel flight and pharmacy will open their doors with limited availability due to this event. In addition, the 95th Force Support Squadron will provide retiree specials in some of its facilities, including Muroc Lake Golf Course, Club Muroc, High Desert Lanes Bowling Center and High Desert Inn. The Retiree Appreciation Day committee is currently looking for volunteers for the set-up, tear-down and preparation process of the event. To volunteer, call 277-8109. "Sometimes, we forget those who've served and what they mean to our country," Lieutenant Athnos said. "They are the reasons why we are here. They've sacrificed 25 to 30 years of their lives, and this is just four hours we try to give back." For retired Master Sgt. Jay Tyrrel, Retiree Activities Office counselor and Retiree Appreciation Day committee member, he said the appreciation day is a good way to honor the retirees. "This is a great event to recognize what retirees have done for this country," Sergeant Tyrrel said. "Any retirees are grateful when they can walk on a military base and have the opportunity to visit and look at the place."
