Base-Wide energy audits to kick-off Energy Awareness Month Published Sept. 5, 2008 EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- More than two hundred base facility managers will learn this month how to conduct building energy audits so they can begin performing the audits in October. "The training program is in preparation for base-wide energy surveys and audits of all our major structures", said Enrique Torres, Base Energy Manager. The audits will be conducted as directed by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which applies to all federal buildings, he added. The training program is scheduled in preparation for Energy Awareness Month in October. The purpose of the surveys and audits is to review all energy-consuming equipment, assess its performance and identify equipment that should be replaced with more efficient and economical versions. Some of the areas to be surveyed are: heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; lighting; water fixtures and irrigation systems; control systems; and conservation awareness measures. Industry and Department of Defense standards will be used to measure Edwards' facility performance and to recommend equipment upgrades and replacements. Also, building-life-cycle-costing analysis tools will be used to estimate the return on investment for the new equipment. An energy scorecard will be developed for each facility that has been surveyed to reflect the potential energy cost savings and conservation benefits. "This is one of the most important exercises we can perform," Mr. Torres said. "Energy conservation and awareness not only make sense, it's a matter of security and sustainability for Edwards Air Force Base and our nation's infrastructure."
