Edwards wins award for outstanding federal electronics stewardship Published Dec. 3, 2008 By Senior Airman Julius Delos Reyes 95th Air Base Wing Public Affairs EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Team Edwards received an Electronics Reuse and Recycling Campaign award from the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive Nov. 19. The base is the large military facility winner for the West Region. The Office of the Federal Environmental Executive's Electronics Reuse and Recycling Campaign aims to challenge federal agencies to donate and recycle excess or surplus electronics. The objective of the campaign is to demonstrate the federal government's commitment to electronics stewardship at end of life, as required by the Presidential Executive Order 13423. "Overall, Edwards has done a very good job reusing and recycling its electronics," said Layi Oyelowo, Environmental Management program manager. "It is a remarkable achievement and shows Team Edwards' commitment to being good environmental stewards." Edwards' electronics products are turned in to the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office Turn-In Center in Barstow, Calif. The center donates some of them to qualified organizations through the Computers for Learning program, and reuses and recycles others through an approved recycling center. During the past 12 months, Edwards reused or recycled more than 1,000 desktop computers, monitors and hundreds of laptop computers, printers and other electronics. "Recycling electronics helps reduce the cost and space of disposal in a landfill," Mr. Oyelowo said. "It also reduces the energy and pollution that would be generated to manufacture a new product, and it reduces the need to extract valuable and limited virgin resources." The base's recycling effort is one of the 18 winners selected from 14 agencies and 124 facilities that participated in the campaign. "We are especially proud of today's winners for tackling head-on a growing environmental threat and by doing it in ways that avoid the many pitfalls and hurdles of the sometimes unscrupulous marketplace," said Joe Cascio, Federal Environmental Executive. The award ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 16 at the White House in Washington, D.C. (Information courtesy of the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive)
