PA staff takes awards in 2008 AFMC Media Contest Published Feb. 5, 2009 By Master Sgt. Alan S. Williams 95th Air Base Wing Public Affairs EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Air Force Materiel Command released results from the 2008 AFMC Media Contest Feb. 3, honoring three members of the 95th Air base Wing Public Affairs office with individual awards. "When I received the results Tuesday, I immediately went to personally congratulate each of them," said Mike Strickler, 95 ABW Public Affairs director. "I am extremely proud of them for their accomplishments in bringing home four MAJCOM level awards." Awarded in the News Article of the Year category is Staff Sgt. Angelique Smythe, noncommissioned officer in charge of Public Affairs. Sergeant Smythe's article "Airman uses SABC skills to save lives in car accident" is what tipped the judges in her favor. "I was really surprised and very excited for both my teammates and myself. We ROCK!" said Sergeant Smythe. "I would also like to thank the people who took time from their schedules for interviews to help me highlight (Tech. Sgt. Rondale Alexander's) accomplishment -- he rocks, too." The second person awarded was recognized in two categories. Dawn Waldman, chief of Electronic News, took first place in the TV News Report (Individual) and TV Feature Report (Individual) categories. "This is really an outstanding accomplishment; Dawn works very hard to make sure the Edwards community is informed," said Mr. Strickler. "This award not only validates the effort she puts into her job, but sets her work as the broadcast news standard for the command." Ms. Waldman outshined the competition with these two productions: "C-130 eight-blade prop" and "Medical commander tanks it." Finally, AFMC honored Senior Airman Julius Delos Reyes, Public Affairs journeyman, as the 2008 AFMC Journalist of the Year. "Airman Delos Reyes put in a lot of hard work in 2008 and the PA team has every reason to be excited for him," said 2nd Lt. Belena Stuart, deputy chief of Public Affairs Operations. "For this category, we submitted a broad sample of his work in news, sports and features to really showcase his talents." "My team put in long hours surveying and relooking at our submissions and, because of the effort, we really put our best foot forward," said Mr. Strickler. "Angel, Dawn and Julius now move on to compete at the Air Force level and I couldn't be prouder of them and the entire PA team."
