DEFY program accepting applications Published March 2, 2009 By Jon Fishman 95th Medical Operations Squadron Drug Demand Reduction EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Drug Education For Youth program is accepting applications for youth ages 9 to12 for the 2009 to 2010 season. DEFY is a program originally created by the Navy in 1993 to raise the quality of life by targeting self-esteem and drug education for military children. Numerous studies indicate that drug abuse prevention is most successful when received just prior to adolescence. This is why DEFY targets youth 9 to12, focusing on building youngsters' self-image and setting goals. The program stresses interpersonal relations and emphasizes leadership and teamwork. Along the way, it raises awareness of the harmful effects of alcohol and other drugs, as well as the dangerous effects of negative peer pressure to join gangs. The structured curriculum offers education, skill development and physical fitness. DEFY is intended to create positive experiences to help children choose healthy alternatives to substance abuse and gang involvement. DEFY is a fully funded program that is free of charge to all Edwards children. The Department of Justice, Department of the Navy in partnership with the Department of the Air Force provide oversight and funding. The program consists of two parts: Phase I, a summer camp, and Phase II, a mentoring program in which youth are paired with an active-duty or DoD-affiliated adult for the duration of the school year. Most participants gain a great deal from the experience. They make lasting friendships and learn a lot about themselves. Upon graduation, children are encouraged to get involved with youth organizations in the local area. For more information call, Drug Demand Reduction at275-3395
