Dental clinic provides advice on grillz Published June 10, 2009 By Tech. Sgt. Dilcy Kammermeyer 95th Medical Operations Squadron EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Grillz, or fronts have been worn by hip-hop artists since the early 1980s. Today they continue to be very popular and are worn by celebrities from Flava Flav to Marilyn Manson. Although these appliances may be a popular trend, they can pose potential dental problems such as inability to bite or close one's mouth all the way. This change can lead to stress on the jaw muscles and joints and headaches. Since these appliances are worn in the mouth, infection control should be considered when they are being made. "The use of grillz is strictly for esthetics and should not be worn for any extended period of time." said Capt. Alexander Ham, 95th Medical Group dentist. Grillz are made of precious metals like gold, silver, or platinum and are worn on the top teeth, bottom teeth or both. Some chose to have precious stones added. Generally, they are removable, though some may be permanently attached to the teeth. Grillz can cost anywhere from $50 to thousands of dollars, depending on the materials used and the number of teeth covered. It can get expensive which encourages individuals to order do-it-yourself kits. One should visit a dentist who can create a fitted appliance and answer questions; although, the base dental clinic does not fabricate these they can still consult you on it. Grills are often made from non-precious metals, which are more likely to result in irritation or allergic reaction. If it is being worn on the top teeth for example, the bottom teeth may be susceptible to chipping, or vise versa. Bacteria and food debris collect under the appliance, contributing to gingivitis, bad breath and tooth decay. Another harmful effect of wearing grillz is not having the proper fit. Obtaining a grill from the internet or jewelers as opposed to visiting a dentist, may result in excess material that can also lead to gum inflammation and plaque retention. Some wear grillz for extended periods which does not allow the gum tissue to breath. It is possible for bacteria and yeast to grow there. Make sure to pay attention to the following recommendations: · Do not share grillz · Visit a dentist · Removed grillz daily · Do not wear for extended periods · Check gum tissue for irritation · Clean grillz thoroughly with a tooth brush · Do not use jewelry cleaner · Brush or floss teeth daily · Remove grillz before eating · Use an over the counter fluoride rinse For more information, call the dental clinic at 277-2872.
