Firefighters from Edwards responded to a 911 call from the commissary July 1. Employees began evacuating customers at approximately 6:52 p.m. when a large water leak caused flooding in the store.

"This is the worst time for this to happen," said Craig Gilliam, Fire Station 2 division chief. "We need to move quickly to get this place open for the holiday weekend."

Fire crews worked rapidly to save thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise and remove water from the store while Security Forces personnel secured the building and ensured the safety of patrons.

"Our job is to secure the scene and support the fire crew in a situation like this," said Senior Airman Jon Cheadle, 95th Security Forces Squadron, security forces specialist. "We're supporting the fire department and they're doing a great job. They've got it under control."

The downpour of foul-smelling water was the result of a broken sprinkler head, according to Mr. Gilliam, which caused some panic from patrons and a loss of business to the commissary.

The facility was able to resume normal operations on time July 2 due to the prompt response from the Edwards Fire Department and 95th SFS.
