Airman, Family Readiness Center to host Train-the-Trainer: How to Build Resiliency in Children, Youth Published Sept. 15, 2010 By Stephen K. Robinson 95th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Office EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Airman and Family Readiness Center will host Train-the-Trainer: How to build resiliency in children and youth. The day-long session will be held Sept. 24 at the AFRC from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with guest speaker Nan Henderson, co-founder and president of Resiliency in Action. "Attendees will be treated to a great guest speaker," said Jocelynn Reyes-LaShier, work-life consultant at Family Readines. "She has authored and edited books and articles on resiliency and is considered a subject-matter expert globally." The event is open to all spouses of deployed members, Key Spouses, Integrated Delivery System members, youth service providers, educators and Chief Master Seargents and First Seargents. DoD and NASA civilian employees are also invited, but excused absence from work is pending supervisor's approval based on mission needs. Supervisors are highly encouraged to authorize employees to attend this training. Because this is a Wellness Program, hours of attendance will be credited as training on employees' bi-weekly work reports, human resources officials said. Ms. Henderson's resume includes publications on resiliency and wellness, positive human development, and school and organizational change. She has provided training in 45 states and several foreign countries over the past 14 years to a wide variety of audiences and organizations, including the Army, Air Force, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Upward Bound, Americorps and state departments of education and human welfare across the United States. She has served on the faculty of five colleges and universities; worked as a clinical therapist with youth, adults and families; and directed citywide and statewide programs. She is author of five books on resiliency, numerous articles and an on-line newsletter distributed worldwide. "During the training, attendees will learn about the research base of resiliency that is emerging in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, sociology and education," said Ms. Reyes-LaShier. "The emphasis of the training will be practical application of these research findings in strategies that can be used to foster resiliency in children and youth, and families and Airmen. This training is important for every person working to help others cope with the stresses of military life especially during deployments and long periods of separation."
