Edwards Tax Center will open Jan. 30 Published Jan. 19, 2011 By Kate Blais 95th Air Base Wing Public Affairs EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Although the Internal Revenue Service has extended the tax filing deadline to April 18 for 2010 federal tax returns, the Edwards Tax Center will begin taking appointments Jan. 24 and will open its doors Jan. 30. Active duty servicemembers, retirees, reservists on active duty orders and their dependents are welcome to schedule a free consultation with IRS-certified volunteers at the tax center. "Essentially, most Airmen will schedule an appointment, bring in their W-2, sit down with a volunteer and go through the tax form and see what their refund's going to be," said Capt. Sam Small, Air Force Flight Test Center Judge Advocate Office chief of legal assistance. "The typical turnaround time for a refund takes about a week with direct deposit." Active duty members can retrieve their W-2 forms on the MyPay website beginning Jan. 24. "The majority of Airmen that we're going to get can file a 1040EZ," said Captain Small. Airmen who make under a certain threshold and who don't own property may want to use that form, especially for those who just have one W-2 and no additional forms to submit. As for the recent headlines concerning filing delays for 50 million taxpayers, Captain Small said only those who itemize their deductions on Form 1040 Schedule A will be affected. "Those people who have special deductions like mortgage insurance and significant charitable contributions are going to want to itemize them on their deductions," the captain said. They'll have to wait until mid-February to file a paper or electronic form. Those who qualify can schedule appointments by calling the tax center at 275-3829 beginning Jan. 24. Walk-ins are welcome on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. only for those filing Form 1040EZ. The tax center is located in the Desert Mall at 1100 Kincheloe Ave. and will be open for appointments Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
