The Edwards Chiefs Group surprised Tech. Sgt. Jessica R. Carper, 412th Maintenance Logistics Squadron, with the group's "Dare to Soar Award" at the Strike Zone Bowling Alley here Oct. 3.

In front of her peers, the Airman was thanked publicly for going above and beyond the call of duty in her service to the Edwards community.

On Sept. 9, Carper drove past Chief Master Sgt. Shawn M. Hughes, superintendent, 412th Operations Group, who was picking up garbage in the middle of Yeager Ave. A 30-gallon trash bag filled with waste had fallen into the roadway and been run over by several times. Trash was scattered, creating an awful mess, the chief said. Food waste had begun to attract wild animals and plastics were scattered and would soon be blown all around the area. Sergeant Carper turned her vehicle around and assisted her fellow Airman with the cleanup.

"I started to laugh, and thought that (must be terrible) to be that guy cleaning that mess all alone," said Carper. "I'd just dropped my girls off at school and had no reason not to get out and help."

Chief Hughes submitted Carper for the award and said, "Tech. Sgt. Carper exemplifies the wingman philosophy!"

His fellow E-9s agreed and presented the award as a group.
