Here at Edwards, Outdoor Recreation has everyone covered for all of it. Skiers, snowboarders, and those just looking to take advantage of the winter months can visit ODR for equipment rental and organized trips. "We do a special with the snowboards and skis where if you pick-up after 3 p.m. then you don't get charged for that day," said Fernando Brown, ODR assistant director. "That way you can get out to the resort early in the morning. And as long as you bring it back by noon on the third day then you only pay for the one-day rental." This winter special applies to all equipment ski- and snowboard-related, which includes not only the skis, snowboards, poles and boots, but also helmets, pants, jackets and gloves. "We have varying types of skis including Telemark skis and boots [free heel skiing], and snow shoes, said Brown. "Come down here and get sized [for equipment]," he said, "That way we keep a record so you can just come in and don't have to go through the whole [fitting] process again." In addition to rentals, ODR can give patron's equipment a tune-up and also give them a ride to the mountain. "We do weekend trips to Mammoth, Big Bear and mid-week trips to Mountain High for night skiing," Brown said. "This deal ends whenever the ski resorts start to shut down. I think last year we ran till around March." Although no reservations are required, all equipment is first-come first-served.
