Military members are often called away for deployments or TDY's and preparing for these military duties can often cause stress and concern. But with the help of the Edwards Legal Office team, you can rest assured that you have taken the proper steps to take care of your family and property. Powers of Attorney and Last Wills and Testaments are terrific tools to ensure that you're prepared if something happens to you.

Powers of Attorney
A POA is a document giving legal authority to another person to act on your behalf for a specified matter. Commonly used POAs include: starting or stopping allotments, obtaining family housing, filing your income taxes, registration or sale of privately owned vehicles; obtaining a new ID card, and other financial matters. A type of POA called "in loco parentis" allows someone to act on your behalf to take care of your children, to include their medical needs. Such POAs are crucial for military members that must have a family care plan.

Individuals wishing to obtain a power of attorney may do so on a walk-in basis Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Edwards Legal Office.

Last Will and Testament/Living Wills
A Last Will and Testament is a legal document that controls the disposition of your property at death, provides guardianship of minor children, and may cover your desires for a funeral or memorial service. A living will is a legal document that expresses your desires regarding medical treatment and termination in the event of a terminal, incurable medical condition. You should update your will for events such as marriage, divorce, birth of a child or anything else that would change how you want to dispose of your property.

Individuals wishing to obtain a last will and testament and/or a living will may do so during Edwards Legal Office walk-in hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and Tuesday and Thursday between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Air Force Legal Assistance Website
The Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps has established the Air Force Legal Assistance website at https://aflegalassistance.law.af.mil, which provides members with basic information on legal assistance topics that commonly affect military members. It also has legal worksheets that a member may complete prior to their visit to the legal office. Completing these worksheets greatly decrease the time spent creating and executing your legal documents, and are extremely beneficial to clients. Worksheets for POAs and Wills can be found on this website. Once you have filled out the required information on the worksheet, please annotate or print the ticket number and bring it with you to the legal office for prompt assistance.
