EAFB Civil Air Patrol Cadets field train Published March 23, 2012 By 95th Air Base Wing Public Affairs EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Edwards Air Force Base Composite Squadron 84 of California Wing, Civil Air Patrol, spent March 10, 11 conducting a field training exercise. The cadets received classroom instruction Saturday morning and in the afternoon the cadets set up camp at Branch Park for hands-on training. The classroom instruction was focused on Emergency Services, one of CAP's three missions. Cadets all completed their initial certification in General Emergency Services. Instruction in the classroom also included learning land navigation and survival techniques. The practical part of the training tested cadets physically and mentally using this knowledge at Branch Park. Cadets learned how to pace count, use the compass, line search, basic First Aid, and use of the Emergency Locator Transmitter, a distress beacon common on general aviation aircraft. This training is the first step in qualification in Urban Direction Finding, which locates ELTs on airfields. Scenarios, simulations and a graduation exercise were used to test cadets' knowledge in these areas. Lt. Col. Kevin Allred, Deputy Commander for Cadets, is aiming for Edwards' CAP cadets to become Urban Direction Finding Team qualified. Squadron 84 is actively recruiting adults 18 and up interested in participating in CAP's Emergency Services Cadet Program and Aerospace Education missions. They would like to invite anyone interested to attend meetings at Building 1850, 315 E. Forbes Ave., from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings, or contact Lt. Col. Gary S. Martin, CAP Commander at 661-277-6543. Guests living off base will need to obtain and arrange for a visitor pass with the squadron commander.
