65 years later: Yeager to reenact first supersonic flight Published Oct. 11, 2012 By Laura Mowry Staff writer EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- While the Edwards community is no stranger to sonic booms, Oct. 14, 1947 marked the first-ever supersonic flight above the Mojave Desert skies. To commemorate the historic event, retired Brig. Gen. Chuck Yeager will reenact the epic moment in aviation history by breaking the sound barrier over Edwards skies Sunday, Oct. 14 at 10:24 a.m. - the same time as the Bell X-1 aircraft 65 years ago. This time, Yeager will be flying in an F-15 Eagle belonging to the 65th Aggressor Squadron out of Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Team Edwards members interested in witnessing the event can expect the F-15 to break the sound barrier above Main Base.
