EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Earthquakes strike suddenly and without warning. In a seismically active region like California, preparation is essential for survival. Since January 2025, the state has experienced a staggering 26,546 earthquakes, including 217 with magnitudes between 3 and 4, and 20 between 4 and 5. Edwards Air Force Base's geographic location between the Garlock Fault and the San Andreas Fault – both known to be capable of significant seismic events – makes preparedness even more critical.
It's not the earthquake itself that typically causes injury or death, but rather falling debris, collapsing structures, and unsecured objects. Taking proactive steps can significantly enhance your safety and the safety of your family. Secure heavy furniture and shelving units to walls using appropriate support bolts. Avoid hanging heavy or large fixtures above beds or in areas where they could fall on you. Store flammable products securely in closed cabinets.
During an Earthquake:
When the ground begins to shake, remember DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON!
- Stay Indoors: Remain inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to exit. Avoid using elevators. Stay away from windows and other glass.
- Find Cover: Seek shelter under a sturdy table or desk. Protect the back of your neck with your hands or a pillow, if available.
- Outdoors: Move away from tall buildings, streetlights, and power lines.
- In a Vehicle: Stay inside and away from bridges, overpasses, buildings, and power lines.
BE PREPARED!
Get a Kit - Assemble a collection of first aid supplies, food, water, medicines, and important papers that can sustain you and your family until the emergency passes.
Make a Plan - You and your family members may not be together when an emergency strikes. Planning ahead will improve your chances of keeping in touch, staying safe, and quickly reuniting.
