EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Edwards Air Force Base is more than just a base; it's a place where the seemingly impossible becomes reality. It's a crucible of innovation, a proving ground for airpower, and a community unlike any other I've had the privilege to serve. As I prepare to depart, the men and women of Edwards have my deepest gratitude for the unwavering support shown to the 412th Security Forces Squadron.
When I arrived in 2023, I quickly realized that while the dedication of our Defenders was undeniable, our voice in the broader test mission wasn't always clear. I am incredibly proud to say that, together, the 412th SFS has changed that. From playing a lead role in the 2024 readiness inspection to consolidating commercial search operations and deploying cutting-edge systems, we've not only found our voice, but also discovered a community that shares our passion for pushing boundaries and achieving "firsts."
This transformation wouldn't have been possible without the support of our base community and, especially, our community decision makers. You welcomed our efforts to improve safety, even when it meant stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. You championed the procurement of advanced weapons systems and safety devices, significantly enhancing the effectiveness and safety of our Defenders. You stood shoulder-to-shoulder with us as we tested our combat skills alongside three other major commands. Other units and fellow Airmen lent us equipment and countless hours to support critical access control operations, ultimately helping protect more than 27,000 members of our community across two wildly diverse communities. Even when we ran out of ticket books, because we were writing record numbers of tickets, (as some of you know – please slow down!), instead of criticism, we received encouragement and accolades for the effort! This level of support is unheard of.
Having served as a Security Forces officer for more than 20 years, I can honestly say that no other installation has appreciated, supported and loved its Defenders as much as Edwards. This base's remote and isolated location presents unique challenges to our defense force, making your efforts to foster a strong community all the more impactful. The time and energy you invest in community activities, projects, sports and events have an outsized effect on the morale and well-being of the 412th SFS and similar units. Please, continue to prioritize these initiatives.
As I depart, I have one final wish: The next time you approach the gate (whichever one we may or may not have left open for you!), take a moment to look at the Defender standing guard, dual-armed and vigilant. See the pride they take in their work. It is a direct reflection of the respect and appreciation they receive from this community. They believe their work is important to the test mission, and it is, particularly during this critical inflection point in airpower. Remember that when the time comes, Security Forces will adapt, fight and, if necessary, die to protect our Airmen and assets.
Thank you for recognizing the vital role our blue berets play in shaping the future of air dominance. Thank you, Edwards, for making my time here so meaningful. I will look fondly on it from the Pentagon…a dream assignment that wouldn’t have been possible without your support.
Gordo, out.
