During April's annual observance of Child Abuse Awareness Month, the Family Advocacy will be sponsoring several events throughout the month highlighting the importance of preventing child abuse.

Family Advocacy empowers and encourages people in the Edwards community to become involved and support families and parents to child abuse and neglect.

While interest in addressing this alarming problem has grown, child abuse and neglect also continue to persist as a national epidemic. In fiscal 2007, Kern County registered about 5,000 child abuse substantiated cases.

Our children and our future are being significantly scared by the abuse they are experiencing. The majority of parents do not plan to be abusive to their child. Through education, support and intervention, parents can learn to end abuse and become the effective, loving parents they want to be.

Community support and education is imperative for raising the expectations to eliminating abuse.
