General Eichhorn reflects on meaning of Holiday Season Published Dec. 16, 2008 By Maj. Gen. David Eichhorn Air Force Flight Test Center EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- This Holiday Season, like all holiday seasons, we should reflect on our own personal pursuit of happiness. Many things make me happy. At work, our service to the Air Force and the nation has made our way of life safer. Whether wearing uniform or civilian clothes, we all have chosen to serve our nation's defense needs. It is a unique calling requiring personal sacrifice, dedicated service, and endless flexibility. We should carry home with us the profound knowledge that we have made a difference and so have our families; after all they've supported us through thick and thin. Remember to show your appreciation for what they've done. Beyond our own families, our fellow Americans are grateful for the job we are doing and the personal and professional contributions that we and our families make every day. I am proud of each and every one of you! Always in our thoughts, we give thanks to those who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice so much to defend our freedom, our homes and our nation. For those of you who are spending these holidays away from home and loved ones, know that you are not alone. You are in the thoughts and prayers of your loved ones, but also in the hearts and minds of other Americans and people around the world. "Peace on earth and goodwill toward men" is the traditional Christmas message of hope. We strive for this every day. Each of you is a shining example of those values we hold most dear, and I ask you to share them with your friends, families and your community. There is more to life than the material. Take care of your emotional and spiritual needs by being aware of others and their needs. No one is an island. We are all part of the whole. Make sure you are aware of the needs and situations of those who work in your sections. Take care of one another and consider extending invitations as appropriate. Gifts are fun and exciting but our devotion to faith, family and freedom provides more deep down satisfaction than anything we could buy. The best things in life and the things that make us happiest are indeed free! Happy Holidays!
