Throughout this month, the Edwards AFB Office of Emergency Management will bring you information you need to be ready when disasters occur.
Emergencies can strike at any time, day or night, so it is important to be prepared for disasters. Taking steps to get yourself and your family ready for disaster can seem daunting, however there are simple ways to be ready.
Make A Plan:
- Know where to go during emergencies and what escape route you will take to get there. Practice this often so you can’t forget.
- Know where you will get your emergency alerts. Sign up for local alerts, ensure your AtHoc is up to date, and pay attention to news alerts.
- Have a plan for communication. During disasters, local cell towers are often overwhelmed, and it can be hard to get calls through, but it may be easier to contact people farther away. Have an identified person out of the area to contact who can then let the rest of your friends and family know you are safe.
Build A Kit:
- Have at least 3 days of non-perishable food and water for each person. Plan for one gallon of water per person, per day.
- Include a first aid kit and customize with any medications you and your family will need, whether over the counter or prescription.
- Include a flashlight and radio with extra batteries or a hand crank
- Power banks and charging cords
- Sanitation supplies
While there are plenty of resources both on base and in the surrounding communities that can assist you, it is essential that you take on the responsibility of planning and preparing ahead of time. During disasters, every second counts. Keeping your kits in easy to grab areas and practicing your plans can help you save time and energy when it truly matters. Understand that you are responsible for your own safety, and it may be a while before first responders are able to provide assistance to you.
Join us at our second annual Preparedness Fair to learn more about preparedness from agencies on and off base on Sept. 27, 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., in the Base Exchange parking lot!
