Schools across the nation are campaigning against drugs during Red Ribbon Week.

For the students on base, Red Ribbon Week is being celebrated this week and the theme is "Drug-Free is the Way to Be." During this week of celebration students will make a personal commitment to live drug-free lives and participate in educational awareness activities that encourage drug prevention.

The Drug Demand Reduction Office at Edwards AFB, in partnership with the 412th Mental Health Flight, has donated promotional items and resources with positive messages to support drug prevention. Those items will be distributed to the students throughout the week. Edwards Air Force Base's security forces have also united with base schools as prevention partners and has visibly taken a stand towards creating a drug-free community.

In preparation for Red Ribbon week, the Kern County Sheriff's Department along with the 412th Security Forces Squadron, and Muroc Joint Unified School Officials, conducted an unannounced drug search Oct. 18. This was a collaborative effort resulting from a long term partnership with the Muroc Joint Unified School District and local law enforcement to keep the base schools safe and drug free.

School officials said it was a pleasure to announce that no drugs were discovered on campus during the drug sweep.

Edwards will continue to partner with Muroc Joint Unified School District to encourage drug awareness, education, prevention, and deterrence.

One way parents can demonstrate their opposition to drugs is by speaking with their children about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of committing to a drug-free life. Parents can also join the pledge in supporting America's Youth in growing up safe, healthy and drug-free. Check out http://redribbon.org and take the pledge today!
