After 45 years in civil service, Sandra Sergent, 412th Logistics Readiness Squadron director, retired Aug. 1, with the Outstanding Civilian Career Service Award. Of those years, 15 were spent at Edwards AFB. Her civil service career dates back to 1966 where she served as an inventory monitor at the former Sacramento Air Logistics Center, McClellan AFB, Calif.

As director of the 412th LRS, Sergent was responsible for ensuring that the 412th Test Wing, Air Force Research Laboratory Detachment 7, NASA and 42 associate units received the supplies, equipment and fuels necessary to accomplish the test mission. The organization also provides Air Expeditionary Force readiness deployment planning and execution to the wing. The 412th LRS consists of 250 personnel and cares for the operation of 27 facilities.

A retirement ceremony was held in Sergent's honor Aug. 1 at the Airman and Family Readiness Center.

"In 1966, the average woman's salary was about 55% of what the average man's salary was. This is the world that Sandy entered as a GS-2," said Brig. Gen. Michael Brewer, 412th Test Wing commander. "Just as impossible as it would have been at that time to think of a female president of the United States, I tell you it would have been nearly as impossible to think of a woman entering in at the ground floor as a GS-2 and grow to become a squadron commander and a glass ceiling breaker."
