HAZCOM notification Published March 25, 2015 By Bioenvironmental Engineering 412th Aerospace Medicine Squadron EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The 412th Aerospace Medicine Squadron wants to remind Team Edwards that the remaining components of the Hazard Communication program are to be completed by June 1, 2016 in order to maintain OSHA compliance. Chemicals are part of everyday life, but different countries have different labeling and hazard information requirements. In an effort to unify the process, the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals was created. OSHA adopted this doctrine in 2014 and set a date of June 1 for compliance. All chemical manufacturers and importers are required to attach a GHS label to the chemical being shipped by Dec. 1, 2015. A plan must be created to ensure chemicals being received are properly labeled by June 1. All hazardous material containers must adhere to the GHS labeling requirements and be accompanied with the new Safety Data Sheet (SDS) format by the June 1 date. The old Material Safety Data Sheet will no longer be valid and will be replaced with the current SDS. The OSHA website may be used to provide guidance on the requirements of GHS labeling.
