'Develop Your Mental Toughness' is theme for upcoming Wingman Day, Nov. 2

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Edwards AFB Wingman Day offers a pause in the day-to-day mission to reinforce the Wingman Concept and focus on unit wellness. Wingman Day events Nov. 2 will include activities that try to develop resilience while focusing on the Comprehensive Airman Fitness' Four Pillars of Resilience: Physical, Mental, Social, Spiritual.

The central message of this Wingman Day is "Develop Your Mental Toughness."

From 8 a.m. to  9 a.m., Ryan Finnegan, co-owner and lead personal defense readiness coach at CFT Self Defense, will hold a one hour self-defense awareness seminar at the base theater designed to increase mental toughness by learning and understanding fear management techniques. Finnegan will cover the basics of self-defense, which can increase someone's understanding of the human body's natural defense system; ultimately, increasing your awareness both internal and external. 

From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Unit Mental Resilience presentations will be observed.

Guest speaker at the base theater from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will be Julian J. Dominguez, a licensed marriage and family counselor.

Live streaming of the Dominquez's presentation will be available at various units on base.

Dominguez is a certified licensed marriage and family counselor. He has both his bachelors and masters in Psychology from Chapman University. He has worked as a staff therapist at a federal prison and for 18 years and worked for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.

Domiguez is a co-author of the book "A Culture of Fear, an Inside look at the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services."

He has extensive experience developing curriculums and conducting trainings on issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, stress management, and vicarious trauma. He is currently an adjunct Professor at Brandman University and is a staff therapist for Mental Health of America.
