Rod and Gun Club hosts shooting competition Published May 20, 2009 By Scott Gordon 95th Force Support Squadron EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Rod and Gun Club hosted the Winter Chain Trap Shooting competition May 16 and 17. The shoot drew competitors from the local area, Southern California and Nevada to compete for the California State Trap Shooters Association's coveted Belt Buckle. Shooters of all ages and skill levels showed off their talent during the event. Juniors, ladies and veterans of all levels of expertise and experience participated as well. Nineteen shooters showed off their abilities while 30 participated in the "Belt Buckle Handicap Event." Homer Hansen, of Mojave, Calif., won the coveted Belt Buckle with a score of 99 out of 100. Bill McLain, of Bill's Backhoe Service, donated the trophies for the singles event, both handicap events, and the events 3 and 4 combined trophies, while Jim Neal donated ammunition for the junior winners. "We could not have had this extraordinary shoot without the assistance of the Edwards' Rod and Gun Club volunteers. They were critical to the success of the event," said Renee Startup, five-time tournament director and Rod and Gun Club manager. "The shoot was an achievement due to the tireless efforts of Lupe Cantu, Reed Volkman, Bruce Hobbs and Bill McLain. The trap machines and voice releases were in fine shape, targets set expertly, and scores were high due to their attention and hard work." Outdoor Recreation Staff and Rod and Gun Club members welcome new shooters and offer assistance in learning the sport. Two skeet ranges and four trap ranges are available. The Club House is also available to rent for parties. For more information, call 275-8727.
