Defense Biometric Identification System is coming to all base gates Published April 6, 2011 By 95th Security Forces Squadron EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- In the near future, the 95th Security Forces Squadron will begin implementing use of the Defense Biometric Identification System at all base gates. This will require all active-duty and retired military members, their dependants, and Department of Defense civilians to register their Common Access Card or DOD-issued identification cards with this system in order to gain entry to Edwards. DBIDS is a DOD-mandated, all-inclusive, expandable force protection access control system that uses both biometrics and automatic identification technology. It is designed to verify access authorization and DOD-produced identification credentials of personnel entering military installations or government-controlled areas using machine-based authentication technologies in conjunction with photograph and fingerprint biometric identification. Edwards will be the 55th DOD installation in the United States to have DBIDS installed and operational. Other Air Force and sister service installations are also currently using DBIDS or awaiting installation. DBIDS has been used overseas since 2003 and has proven successful as an effective force multiplier for integrated defense, security workers say. The system will take some time to install and more information will be distributed once it becomes available.
