Citizens of Antelope Valley and cities surrounding Edwards may now apply for a golf pass to enjoy the base's scenic 18-hole golf course.

After approval from base officials, community leaders, Air Force Materiel Command and the Air Force, Muroc Lake Golf Course is now open to the public.

The course, which features green manicured fairways surrounded by desert landscape, allows local golfers who are not affiliated with the base another venue to play.

"The main reason why this was done was for the community," said Howard Kuroda, golf course manager. "We want to share with the surrounding cities the beautiful golf course we have on base."

Mr. Kuroda said those who want to play on base must call the golf course and be put on a sponsor list, which is given to security forces to allow the applicant base access.

The process starts by an applicant calling the Edwards Air Force Base Muroc Lake Golf Course at 661-275-7888 (PUTT).

Then, the applicant will be required to visit the Muroc Lake Golf Course and fill out an application for a base access golf pass.

Applications will then be turned over to the 95th Security Forces Squadron for a background check to be completed.

Once the background check is complete, the applicant will be contacted and may then go to Pass and ID in Bldg. 3000 and have a pass issued to him or her.

Danny Bazzell, Edwards Civilian-Military Support Group vice president and Strategic Communications director, said opening up the golf course is a good move.

"Opening it up to the public is great. It's a beautiful and challenging course and opening it up means more people get to come out and enjoy it," said Mr. Bazzell.

Muroc Lake Golf Course opened in 1967. Along with the 6,915-yard course, facilities include a driving range, putting green and a clubhouse that serves breakfast, lunch and refreshments.
